Beyer agrees that some startups jump the gun. âMany companies are way too early,â he says. âAs a startup, you have such scarce resources,â he says. âYou should focus all you have on one market first and be the leader there. Huebler was surprised at how generous companies in Silicon Valley were with advice and information. âIn Germany if you have a great idea or if you want to partner with a bigger company, it would probably take you five months to meet the right person,â Huebler says. âIn Germany, talking to a CEO is almost impossible unless you know five people who went to kindergarten with them. Here itâs easier to get a meeting with a CEO. People know if they donât take this chance, someone else will.â Accelerator programs can be the key to quickly building your network, Beyer says. âWith the German accelerator, if youâre in the program and the mentors feel like youâre ready and you have potential, theyâll introduce you to that network,â he says. âYou get into the community within six months, nine months instead of trying for years.â Why Make the Move? Huebler says informal, face-to-face interactions like grabbing drinks make it so much easier to establish meaningful connections with important people. âMeeting people in person, you get more out of the meeting,â he says. âIn such a quick and fast virtual world, people are coming back to personal connections.â You also have easier access to your U.S. customers. âYou have to be close to your customers, be able to visit them at their workplace, get involved personally, find out what their problems are and what theyâre dealing with every day, to really understand them and be able to sell a solution that they honestly benefit from,â Akbari says. An innovative environment The startups I talked to all mentioned the innovative attitude they feel in Silicon Valley and the U.S. and how the rhythm of innovation feels different from Europeâs. âWe want to be there where the smartest minds are, where the technology epicenter is and where we can feel all the trends, Beyer says. We feel them earlier [in the U.S.] than in Germany.â The speed at which progress happens is a plus, too. âYou can create things much faster here,â says Huebler. âYou can meet on a Monday and get stuff done by the end of the week. In Europe, itâd probably take you four weeks. Iâm not necessarily saying the quality is better, but people try things fast here.â Thereâs also a willingness to experiment more, says Akbari. âThe U.S market is faster with the adoption of new technologies than Germany. Courtesy photoWhile some classmates aspired to travel to New York, Chicago, Silicon Valley, Wall Street or other well-known business districts for their summer 2018 internships, Sophia Metzger ââ¬â a rising junior at Indiana Universityââ¬â¢s Kelley School of Businessà ââ¬â had a destination in mind that was far more out of the ordinary. The home of Nelson Mandela, apartheid, mass inequality, and social injustice: South Africa. Her thought process? ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be afraid to go against what you think youââ¬â¢re supposed to do or what most people are doing and to find value in the overall life lessons youââ¬â¢re going to take away from a country such as South Africa, she says.ââ¬ËI CO NSIDER MYSELF RISK AVERSE SO I KNEW THIS WOULD BE INTERESTINGââ¬â¢To be precise, Johannesburg, South Africa is where Metzger spent the last eight weeks as a consulting intern for Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, a digital entrepreneurship incubator for students, working professionals, and unemployed youth. In her consulting role, she was tasked with boosting engagement to get university students in the area more involved and interested in the innovation precinct. She chose to work with a digital innovation firm because it was an area ââ¬â much like South Africa ââ¬â that was foreign to her.ââ¬Å"I really wanted to put myself in a new space,â⬠says Metzger who is studying finance and law, ethics, and decision-making along with a minor in sociology. This is her second internship. The first being last summerââ¬â¢s role as a business operations intern with a tennis club in her hometown. ââ¬Å"Digital innovation and entrepreneurship was something I didnâ⬠â¢t have a lot of experience with, she continues. I consider myself pretty risk averse so I knew this would be really interesting.â⬠GETTING TO KNOW SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTSHer expectations were spot on. As part of their job to create a student activation campaign, Metzger and two other student interns from the University of Notre Dame and McGill University in Canada conducted surveys and focus groups with their target audience.Inside Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, a digital entrepreneurship incubator in South Africa where Sophia Metzger interned this summer as a social impact consultant. It was so cool just to hear how university life is so different here,â⬠Metzger tellsà PoetsQuants for Undergrads in a phone interview from South Africa. ââ¬Å"Still, we have so much in common. Being able to hear ab out the passion they have for entrepreneurship was just incredible. In the U.S. ââ¬â because of the pressure to find a job ââ¬â entrepreneurship is seen as risky. Here, itââ¬â¢s seen as even more risky. One person had multiple failed businesses and a lot of friends and family didnt support her, but she was ready to go start a third.â⬠Metzger cites these interactions with South African undergraduate and post-graduate students as the most memorable part of her summer internship. But there were other key takeaways and lessons learned about the consulting career she intends to launch once she finishes Kelley.LEARNING THE JOB OF A CONSULTANTââ¬Å"Going through the projects, I was able to gather the true value of what a consultant is and thatââ¬â¢s an outside perspective, Metzger says. Iââ¬â¢m a consultant, Iââ¬â¢m not interning for this company. Once I realized that, I was able to add value.â⬠Likewise, Metzger says this summerââ¬â¢s internship was crucia l in teaching her how to be a young professional in a setting where she doesnââ¬â¢t have much experience, yet having to learn the value in speaking up for herself. ââ¬Å"Structuring that in terms of my future, this is so important in a consulting role, she says. As a consultant, you come in as someone from the outside and engage with someone whoââ¬â¢s been doing it for 30 years. Speaking up in a way thatââ¬â¢s professionally appropriate for the setting is really critical. Itââ¬â¢s the only way to provide value in the end.â⬠Another factor was learning how to manage expectations. ââ¬Å"Managing my own expectations and adapting quickly when they change,â⬠she says. ââ¬Å"Also, managing the expectations for a client and having to speak when something they want is not feasible. I used to be timid growing up, so if you told me Iââ¬â¢d have to tell my boss what they wanted wasnââ¬â¢t possible, I wouldââ¬â¢ve freaked out.â⬠BEST ADVICE FOR INTERNING ABR OAD: LISTEN UP!As far as interning abroad goes, Metzgerââ¬â¢s advice for other students includes getting to know the culture of the region and its effect on business practices.ââ¬Å"A side project I worked on was creating a contract for an incubation program at the precinct, Metzger says. Currently, thereââ¬â¢s poor attendance and sometimes poor behavior during events. I was tasked with creating a contract to serve as a code of conduct for incubation members to sign so they know whatââ¬â¢s allowed and whatââ¬â¢s not.ââ¬Å"This is where I learned a lot from the international context. There were so many external factors to keep in mind such as is this contract readable? The education system in South Africa isnââ¬â¢t that great. It doesnââ¬â¢t take much to become a teacher and people get passed on to other grade levels very easily so you have people moving up in grades and maybe not really ready. When writing this legal contract, I had to make sure it was easy to re ad and not filled with legal jargon. Learning to seek all these insights and turn them into a recommendation for this company was really important.â⬠To this end, Metzgerââ¬â¢s advice to others who may find themselves immersed in a foreign country for an internship is to take the first couple weeks to simply listen and ask as many questions as possible. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s easy to come in and think you can find a solution, but without understanding what life is like, the culture of entrepreneurship here, youââ¬â¢re not going to be on the right track and ask the right questions.â⬠Page 1 of 212à »
